ABEL & COLE: WHAT IS IT?

Abel & Cole has been banging the drum for organic eating since 1988 – way, way before it was cool. It all started with Keith Abel, who began delivering organic potatoes with a van 30 years ago.

Today, the company has grown to offer a range of vegetables, fruit, cupboard staples and sweet (and alcoholic) treats. Everything it sells matches its sustainable, local and seasonal ethos. Plus, you can buy household items, too, including loo roll, dishwasher tablets and more.

ABEL & COLE: HOW SUSTAINABLE IS IT?

Very, because the whole company revolves around a sustainable approach to eating. This means animals and staff are treated with the highest of welfare standards (the staff even get lunch cooked for them every day), and everything is grown as sustainably as possible. Given the quality of the produce, a fruit and veg box delivered to your door every week starting from ÂŁ14.25 sounds like a no brainer to us.

A bit of insider knowledge for you: Abel & Cole is just getting their Responsible Supplier Programme  off the ground. It’s a voluntary scheme that assesses their suppliers on social responsibility, environmental stewardship, offers a benchmark and compliance. Most suppliers have jumped at the chance to be involved, which says a lot.

We’ll report back with official results as soon as we have them.

ABEL & COLE: HOW DOES IT WORK?

You can order a fruit and veg subscription box, packed with seasonal delights or build your own and top up your pantry with everything from organic eggs to British-grown grains.

Delivery is weekly, and your box gets dropped off by one of the brand’s signature vans.

As for the box, the company offers a recycling service with its subscription, so the packing your food comes in can be used again and again.
