MONKEE GENES: WHAT IS IT?

Monkee Genes has been in the ethical denim game for more than 10 years now, so it understands what makes a good pair of jeans and produce modern styles in a range of shades.

From skinny fit to wide baggy jeans, Monkee has a style for every occasion. Super skinny jeans come in every shade of blue and grey. Straight, high-waisted jeans that stop just above the ankle are perfect for everyday wear. Loose fit jeans are more suited to those cool, casual days.

As well as denim – and some funky dungarees – Monkee has created a range of branded tops and hoodies.

MONKEE GENES: HOW SUSTAINABLE IS IT?

Monkee ensures that every manufacturer in their supply chain holds a sustainable or ethical certification. Before production begins, each factory is vetted and personally visited by Monkee founder Philip Wildbore.

The brand has been working with one particular factory in Indonesia for more than a decade. This company is regularly audited to ensure a safe and happy working environment. It uses GOTS-certified organic cotton and has achieved STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX. This means the fabrics used do not use harmful pesticides or chemicals during farming or the dyeing processes.

Over the last couple of years, Monkee has also started working with a factory in Pakistan, which is also GOTS-certified. Plus the factory has been audited by SMETA, ensuring better labour rights and higher health and safety regulations.

Finally, Monkee sources its t-shirts and tops from a factory in India. Again, the factory is GOTS-certified and Fairtrade, sos workers are paid fairly for their work.

Monkee Genes states that this factory is in the process of building safe living accommodation for the workers who have travelled from the rural countryside. The complex will also have play spaces and nurseries for the workers’ children. What’s more, Monkee has shown that everyone in the supply chain is paid a living wage, from the UK offices to each factory.

In 2014, Monkee become a PETA-approved vegan brand, so all products are vegan-friendly and cruelty-free.

MONKEE GENES: WHERE CAN I BUY IT?

Monkee has stockists around the world, but for a comprehensive store shop online. And you’ve got no excuses – since 2018 Monkee Genes offers a range of ethical jeans for £50 in a bid to make ethical products more accessible. Now that’s what we like to hear.
