THE ETHICAL DAIRY: WHAT IS IT?

The Ethical Dairy is, well, an ethical dairy, producing cheese and ice cream made with organic milk from its own dairy herd. And this cheese is seriously good. You can buy everything from a starter pack with all the company’s favourites to specific cheese like the Rainton tomme or the smooth, rich Fleet Valley Blue.

THE ETHICAL DAIRY: HOW SUSTAINABLE IS IT?

Rainton Farm, where the cows live, is the first commercial dairy in the UK to be following the cow with calf method – which goes to show that calf dairy farming can be done at scale.

For context, almost all calves are separated from their mothers within hours of birth (and, even worse male cows are often killed at birth because of their inability to produce milk).

These are some of the main issues that animal welfare activists raise when talking about dairy farming. This is obviously important for the happiness of the cows and the calves, but there’s another reason for doing so – calves raised on their mother’s milk grow faster and healthier than those raised on substitute powdered milk.

At Rainton Farm, the calves are separated from their mothers around five months. Of course, there are other issues at stake – and there are arguments from both sides on the best methods, but Ethical Dairy’s approach is definitely leading the way for a shift in dairy farming.

Elsewhere, the company has cut greenhouse emissions by 50%, cut its antibiotic use, increased its farm biodiversity, prolonged the productive life of its cows, and much more. Overall, the farm focus on farming with compassion for both the animals and the people working the land.
